The Times ‘Power 100′

7 Oct, 2010

 Mark Walport and Paul Nurse

Two Sirs with love (for science): Mark Walport and Paul Nurse

Congratulations to the Trust-funded and Trust-associated scientists in the inaugural Times Eureka ‘Power 100′ list of the most influential people in British science (please note links to The Times are behind a paywall).

Top of the pile is Sir Paul Nurse, incoming President of the Royal Society and Director of the UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation (UKCMRI). But a close second is our own Director, Sir Mark Walport, who, according to the listing “sports a moustache to rival Sir Henry’s legendary handlebars”. There are some kind words about the Trust too (“a unique national and international resource… no other country has anything quite like it”).

Also on the list are several names associated with the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. Sir John Sulston, the Institute’s first Director and pioneer of the Human Genome Project, is at number 6 and Fred Sanger himself is at number 22. Professor Mike Stratton, the new Director of the Sanger Institute and one of the world’s leading cancer researchers, is at number 36.

Also on the Times list are geneticist and Wellcome Trust governor Professor Kay Davies (no. 29) and the cancer scientist Professor Peter Ratcliffe (no. 60).

You can debate the list at a special Eureka Live event at Wellcome Collection on 4 November. Register now for your free ticket.
