It’s our 75th anniversary this year. We’ve got lots of activities planned, but we wanted to do something special for the people who follow us online.
A random conversation on Twitter (thanks Alice Bell) brought up something BBC Radio 4 did last year – a ‘tweet-up’ (an informal gathering organised via Twitter) including a special tour of Broadcasting House for a small group of their followers. It was such a brilliant idea, we thought we’d do something similar.
On Tuesday 28 June, #wellcometweetuptour will guide 20 people through parts of our buildings the public rarely gets to see, and with insight from specialist Wellcome Trust staff. The two hour tour is slated to include:
- Our HQ, the Gibbs building on Euston Road, including a close-up look at the Bleigiessen sculpture.
- The storerooms of the Wellcome Library’s Iconographic Collections, with a glimpse at stuff from our collection that is not currently on public display.
- A special insight tour of the Wellcome Library from our Research Officer Ross Macfarlane.
- Some of the unusual historical objects and sci-art we have on tucked away in the corners of the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre, illustrating aspects of the Trust’s 75-year existence.
The tour will finish with us decamping to a nearby pub to continue our conversations about science, medicine, history, social media, blogs etc.
The tour is free and open to anyone interested (and no, you don’t need to on Twitter to apply). However, it is limited to just 20 people.
How do you get in on this? Simply tweet us (@wellcometrust) with the hashtag #wellcometweetuptour telling us in the remaining space (104 characters) why you’d like to come. Alternatively, you can leave a comment under this blog post or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org (though I will expect you to keep to the 104 character limit too!).
You can be as inventive as you like with the space available. The best 20 replies received will be invited to the tour. Deadline for entries is 6pm on Friday 13 May.
The tour is at our building in London, and sadly we can’t pay any expenses, so please bear that in mind if you are from outside the capital.
And while only 20 people can come on the tour itself, I’ll tweet and add details here about the pub we’re going to afterwards (from about 8pm) for anyone interested in joining us. UPDATE: We’ll be in the Jeremy Bentham from 8pm on the night.
So in summary:
When: 6–8pm, Tuesday 28 June 2011
Where: The Wellcome Trust, 215 Euston Road, London
Who: 20 people drawn from the entries received
How: Tweet us @wellcometrust with the hashtag #wellcometweetuptour telling us in the remaining space why you’d like to come. You can also leave a comment under this blog post on our Facebook page or email email@example.com (though you will still be expected to keep to the 104 character limit).
