Canapés, celebrities, speeches and sparkling wine: the Wellcome Trust Science Writing Prize 2012 was awarded on Wednesday evening, at an event hosted by Wellcome Collection.

The shortlisted writers were joined by the great and the good of science journalism, and the awards were presented by judges Robin Ince and Liz Bonnin.

First, Catherine Hess was highly commended in the category for professional scientists, then the two winners were announced: Adam Kucharski in the scientists category and Cassie Barton in the general category.

As well as celebrating the winners and, indeed, everyone on the shortlist, the event was a great opportunity for writers present and future to share advice, words of encouragement, and a few drinks.

Armed with tape recorders, Nancy Wilkinson and I set out to capture some of the chatter, asking entrants and guests to share their thoughts on science writing.

All the shortlisted entries will be published on the blog in the coming months. In the meantime, you could always read last year’s shortlisted entries.

It was an honour to be short-listed, and the workshop and award’s ceremony was very enjoyable. Glad to hear that my praise for Carl Sagan made it into the audio clip!
